Becoming a Junior Ranger

If you are interested in learning a thrilling way to experience nature with your family, earn some badges, and improve your health, take a walk with me as I share with you my experience of becoming a Georgia State Park Junior Ranger.  Most people may find it hard to connect with family and nature, but now with the Junior Ranger program offered at Georgia State Parks, people can explore nature while having a fantastic time with the family.

This free program is designed for Girl Scouts ages 6 to 12 to get in touch with nature, and to have an exceptional day with the family.  Not only do you get to have an enjoyable time, but you can work towards earning a badge!  Getting started is easy; simply visit any one of the 63 Georgia State Parks and ask a Ranger for a Junior Ranger Booklet.  The booklet will help you learn how to proceed through your journey in discovering new things. 

In the Junior Ranger program, Girl Scouts can connect with nature. Girls can observe anything from animals to plants, and even moon phases.  This program teaches you about things in nature people wouldn’t usually notice, and it teaches Girl Scouts things to be aware of nature.  In my experience, I learned how to identify different types of birds, plants, and signs of animals (including dung, tracks, sound, and smell).  I also learned about past wars and historic sites; however, my favorite part in nature was observing the wildlife.  I wrote notes about all the animals I observed such as an egret, geese, a salamander, and even a snake! The flora and fauna in nature are a spectacular site.  It is an appreciated memory that is forever in my heart.  These wondrous sights will change the way people see things in nature.  

          The Junior Ranger program also incorporates the Get out. Get dirty. Get fit. program, which mainly focuses on getting healthy and fit. This program includes hiking, biking, fishing, golfing, camping, and climbing a canyon.  Along with these activities, Girl Scouts can learn new outdoor skills, how to make a healthy/high energy trail mix, and you can enjoy a sunrise or sunset. This program helps Girl Scouts work towards a badge by doing many of these activities and checking them off as they complete each activity.  This is aimed mostly towards ages 7 – 14, but younger kids may participate as well.  In my experience, I combined some of the activities by doing them in one day.  While my family and I were going on a hike on one of the trails that were part of the Canyon Climber club, I made everyone a trail mix as a boost of energy for the trail.  On that same day, I photographed the beautiful waterfall that poured out into the peaceful river.  This club also introduced me to camping.  My sister and I built a tent and we fished together. After that my family and I saw the gorgeous sunset while making gooey s’mores above the blazing fire.  One of my favorite things was documenting my experience, so my memories will never fade of this breath-taking journey.  After I documented everything, I was eligible to earn my badge, and I now proudly wear it on my vest.  Who knew being healthy could be an exhilarating experience?! 

         Although improving your health and learning about nature is great, nothing can beat the quality time that girls can spend with their family.  They will be able to create memories with this program.  Girl Scouts can create a photo album of their journey, or maybe they will make a collage.  No matter what they choose to do with these memories, they will always be shared amongst their family.  I guarantee Girl Scouts and their family will always leave the park with a smile as bright as the sun pasted onto their faces.  My family took over 100 pictures of us together doing these pleasant activities and saved them on an online photo album. We often talk about the adventures, and always end up smiling or laughing. We had such a joyous time that we are thinking of doing it again this summer, and focusing more on being healthy.  I will never forget the time I had with my family during those few months.  We conquered a lot, and did it all together.  I personally was fond of the family bonding time.

         I highly recommend joining the Junior Ranger Program.  There are so many advantages, as well as a vast amount of knowledge that the girls can gain.  Girl Scouts and their family will never leave the Georgia State Parks unhappy.  Are you ready to begin your adventure?  Enjoy the experience!

Camping

There are many different camps all around the United States and on other continents but there are only a small number of Girl Scout Camps around the world.

Each Girl Scout camp has its own characteristics. Some camps may have horses. Some may be built around a lake so you can go tubing and canoeing. A few camps have rope courses. Some even have zip lining and gorging (where you jump into a river off of a boulder).

Some camps have cabins or tents and some have both. There is always a camp that fits your unique personality. I have been to all of the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta original camps and Camp Misty Mountain fits my personality just fine.

          Camp Misty Mountain is located in Armuchee, Georgia. The camp is located on John’s Mountain.

I have only had one chance to go there and I am glad I took that chance. One of my best friends, Hayley, and I went up there three summers ago. I am now going to put you in my view of this little adventure that lasted a week and probably was the most memorable summer camp I ever attended.

When you are at bottom of the mountain you can see the little trails of power lines that lead down John Mountain. It doesn’t seem like the height of the mountain is so well, high. As you start going up you start to see little farms and houses on the roadside. You also start to see more and more trees and cows. As you go up higher all you see is beautiful mountains and countryside.  You also see crops growing and no department store in sight! Everything is so beautiful you forget to look down. 

Then next thing you know pines obscure your sight and oaks and your car goes higher and higher. Then you’re looking down at a huge hill full of growing trees and trees that have fallen. Scattered leaves lay everywhere. When you get to a power line trail you look down and can see the whole town and all the other mountains in the distance. You wish you were on the other side of the car so it wont fell like your weight will flip the car down the mountain. Everything looks like little ants below. You scrunch down in your seat so you can’t look down. But you are so curious you look out again and you see the hill again. The road gets curvier and your mom or dad slows the car down. Then there’s another power line trail and then another and you’re at the top.

There’s a certain spot that lets you see Camp Misty Mountain where it sits in its little valley. The camp definitely lives up to its name. It’s so misty that you can hardly see the camp. You keep driving and you don’t even have to press the gas pedal anymore and then you are at the camp gates.

You get nervous. There is so much to do that you can’t wait to get started! Horseback riding, swimming, archery, canoeing, hiking, dance, arts and crafts, basketball, sidewalk chalk, singing and more! You love the counselors. and your campsite Windy Hill. You fall in love with the camp and you can’t wait to come back next summer.

That is how I felt on my camping trip to Camp Misty Mountain. I loved it so much that I am planning on being a counselor or wrangler in training when I get older. I originally went to Camp Misty Mountain for the horses but I came back with so much more! I love Camp Misty Mountain and maybe one day you may get a chance to love it also.

How to Prevent Bullying

The different signs of bullying are someone calls you names, makes certain face gestures, and/or rude comments.

When you are in a situation where someone is teasing you or hurting you, no matter how old or young the bully might be, the key is to tell an adult you trust. Never fear a bully - stand up for yourself. Not by fighting but by having a voice to tell them how you feel.  Bullying can affect someone in different ways.

Most victims of bullying tend to lose sleep or feel sick. Many have the urge to want to skip school. Someone who is bullied may even have the thought of killing herself or himself.

If you feel like this get help immediately! Talk to a teacher, a Girl Scout adult or even call a hotline like the National Suicide Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK). Remember, you are NOT alone.

Bullying can take many forms but it usually includes the following types of behavior:

• Physical – hitting, kicking, pinching, punching, scratching, spitting or any other form of physical attack. Damage to or taking someone else’s belongings may also constitute as physical bullying.

• Verbal – name calling, insulting, making racist, sexist or homophobic jokes, remarks or teasing, using sexually suggestive or abusive language, offensive remarks

• Indirect – spreading nasty stories about someone, exclusion from social groups, being made the subject of malicious rumors, sending abusive mail, and email and text messages (cyber bullying).

• Cyber Bullying - any type of bullying that is carried out by electronic medium. There are 7 types including:

1. Text message bullying
2. Picture/video clip bullying via mobile phone cameras
3. Phone call bullying via mobile phones
4. E-mail bullying
5. Chat-room bullying
6. Bullying through instant messaging (IM)
7. Bullying via websites

Contact the State Department of Education if you are not satisfied with your school administration’s response to your reports of bullying. Their Toll Free School Safety Hotline is 1- 877- SAY STOP.

I just joined Girl Scouts and I am a bit overwhelmed by all of the things there are to do? Advice on how to decide which Journey to pick or what camp activity to sign-up for?

Dear New GS,

My advice to you for picking a Journey is to go to www.girlscouts.org, click on programs and then pick Journeys in order to find a list of the Journey books and topics, or go to a local Girl Scout store to look at the books they have available. Pick the book that looks interesting to you and flip through it and see if you like the activities it asks you to do!

As for camp activities, go with something you think sounds fun and take into consideration the time of day you are doing the activity. I would sign up for a water activity during the hottest part of the day so you can cool off. Doing a camp activity with a friend is also a good idea, so if you and your friend sign up at the same time it can be really fun, just make sure to meet new friends as well!

Dear Living Two Lives,

I would make sure to have the phone numbers and email addresses of your new friends so you can talk everyday! Keep in touch with them by calling or texting and tell them all about how things are at your Mom’s house. You could also become pen pals with them and send letters and pictures back and forth. You can even make a game out if it and create your own secret code and only write to each other using that code! Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are also a great way to keep in touch with each other’s everyday lives. Just be sure you have your parents’ permission before you create a profile.

My last piece of advice is that every time you visit your Dad’s house, make sure you spend some time with your friends!

Dear Desperate,

9^th grade is one of the hardest years, but there are some things you can do to make it better. First, I suggest joining clubs and sport teams to meet a variety of new people, become as involved as you can in your school because it is very impressive on college applications!

Make sure you keep an agenda or calendar of all your activities and homework because it can be very overwhelming.

Second, make sure you do all of your work at school and get good grades because you will be thankful for it as you start to take harder classes.

Third, don’t be afraid to ask a teacher for help finding your next class or if you don’t know how to do something.

Lastly, look around your school for posters because they can keep you informed about all the things going on in your school. Just remember that you aren’t the only one, everyone has been there and everyone around you is just as afraid as you are.

Organization: Tips for Teens!

Staying organized in school is not hard at all, especially if you follow these helpful tips! ☺

• Study and do homework in a quiet, well-lit area
• Write down important notes and reminders
• Keep your school locker clean and neat
• Keep all writing utensils together so they don’t get lost or stolen
• Memorize your locker combination and keep a copy of the written combination in a safe place (not inside of the locker)
• Carry an agenda with you to your classes to write down reminders and assignments      
• Study your notes daily and save them
• Keep all work and notes for each subject together  

Halloween

When I think of Halloween, I think of dressing up in a costume and going door to door around the neighborhood collecting delicious candy. But what is the real meaning of Halloween and where does it come from?

The word Halloween is derived from the term "All Hallows Eve" which occurred on Oct. 31^st. "All Saints Day," or "All Hallows Day" was the next day, Nov. 1^st.

The origins of Halloween can be traced back to ancient Ireland and Scotland around the time of Christ. On Oct. 31^st, the Celts celebrated the end of summer. This was important because it was when animal herders would move their animals into barns and pens and prepare to ride out the winter. This was also the time of the crop harvests. This annual change in season and in lifestyle was marked by a festival called Samhain, which means 'end of summer.'

Today typical festive Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, carving jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, visiting haunted houses, playing pranks, telling scary stories, watching horror films, as well as praying, fasting and attending church services.

So there is no reason to be afraid on Oct. 31^st. After all, it’s just All Saints Day Eve.  ☺

Funny Hairstyles

Do you like funny hairstyles? Do you have ‘funny hair’ days at your school, church group or Girl Scouts? Well, here’s a few funny ways that you can style your hair. So, grab your hair brush, hairspray and silly bands (yes, that’s right… don’t throw those silly bands away yet!) and let’s get started.

“Who Hair”: You might have heard of Cindy Lou Who from “How the Grinch stole Christmas.” She had two large braids, pulled up high in the center of her head, wrapped around an even higher ‘bottle hair’ (see below) and then tied it at the top with a big red bow. An easier way you can make funny “Who Hair” is to take 4-5 different groups of your hair, and put each in a hair band. Then twirl a pipe cleaner (very tightly) around and down the length of each section of hair. Finally, pull all the sections you just created together on the top of your head and put a hair band in the middle to make them all stay together. (They should be standing upright and all floppy out the top.) Then you can add some curling ribbon wherever you want for a fun, festive look. Optional:  Some colored hair spray can be added to make the “Who Hair” extra crazy.

“Bottle Hair": This is a funny way to make your hair stand straight up on top of your head.  You will need an empty plastic water bottle.  Place the water bottle in the middle of your head, turn your head upside down and let your hair fall all around the bottle – then tie with a hair tie at the top of the bottle and tip your head back upright.  There you will see it!  Your hair standing straight up on your head and you will amaze your friends and family.  Some will ask– “How did you do that?” But only you know the secret! (Note:  For shorter hair, use a small plastic cup.)

     “Silly Band Braids”: Do you have tons of Silly bands – remember when 

they were a really big obsession and everyone had them

 running up and down their arms? They were even banned in some schools because they were a distraction in class.  Well, what do you do with all those silly bands now … now that they are no longer popular?  Thinking about throwing them away?  Well, don’t! Instead, put them in your hair!  You can put those silly bands in your hair with braids.  Depending on how many silly bands you have, you can have one large braid or several little braids.  As you braid your hair, you would slip a silly band onto your hair and continue braiding.   You would repeat this process as many times as you want. Basically, you are placing them in your hair loosely at different places, allowing them to lie on your hair as you braid it down to the ends.  Have fun with your friends trying to guess what the shapes are in your hair.  You can put them in your hair using themes, or colors, or just a variety.  See how many silly bands you can have in your hair at one time.  Be creative!

Decorating Your School Supplies

Organizing your school supplies is essential for academic success but school supplies don’t have to be boring. They can be stylish and personal too! You can make your supplies original and cool with your own flair. This can also be extremely helpful especially for people like me who are always misplacing papers, pencils, and assignments.

First, let’s start with a notebook. You can use any color, brand, or size of notebook for this project. Grab plenty of colorful paper or scrapbook paper and your amazing imagination. Cut out from the colorful paper all different sizes of squares or designs. Next, glue the squares to the cover (I use tacky glue). You can add stickers, ribbons, glitter, etc. on your cover. Now you have a fabulous notebook for school.  Since your notebook is now as individual as you are, you are more likely to enjoy using and keeping up with it!

Clipboards are so much fun to decorate and really useful for school or for your to-do list. This little project is so easy and cheap you will want to make more!  Maybe you could make a few for back to school gifts for your teachers or friends. All you need is a plain clipboard, paper, and once again, your imagination. First, pick your paper or papers. Next, decoupage the paper or papers in layers on the front, back or both! Finally, you can add stickers, glitter, ribbons, and other decorations!

You can also decorate a piece of paper cut to fit a three-ring binder and slip it in the clear front pocket.  Why not, attach a ribbon to your pencil to keep it with your clipboard or binder or use decorative tape to attach an artificial flower to the end so it doesn’t get misplaced.

Spend some time planning how you organize your school supplies and then get busy decorating and personalizing.  Remember to get a parent’s permission or their help if needed! I hope you have been inspired to decorate your school supplies!

DIY: Disco Ball Bedroom

Hi! Professional DIY (Do It Yourself) handy-girl Emily here! Today, I’ll be showing you how to turn your bedroom into the cool effect of sleeping inside a disco ball! It is an easy and cheap way to tip the scales of the coolness factor, and is easy to remove when you want to change your theme.

This disco ball bedroom is a fail-safe method that allows you to literally bask in your friends’ radiance. No really, all the colorful lights you and your friends really will bask in some radiance. Plus, with the lights out, some hot tunes, and all the disco ball lights everywhere, it is the perfect recipe to a five-star party. Whether it be sleepover, birthday, or just hang-out time, this is truly something to behold.

To start this project, you need lots of CDs (depending on the size of your room) that you do not use or need anymore. Remember to check with your parents and/or siblings about the CDs you pick. Find some glue, preferably hot glue, and paper (any color of your choice.) A strobe light is recommended, but tape is required, as well as scissors.

First, you take your scissors and cut out a sheet of paper slightly bigger than the CD. *Next, using the hot glue, glue the CD to the paper. Make sure to wait at least 10-15 minutes for the glue to dry. Lastly, using the tape, tape the paper with the CD to the wall.  When you have decorated all of the wall space you want, attach a strobe light in one of the corners of your room. Make sure it is within reach. Hook up your iPod and prepare to get funky!!

*Note: Always ask for parent permission before you start a big craft project. Girls aged 8-12 need adult supervision with the hot glue gun.

Book Review: Clockwork Angel

            Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare is the first book in the trilogy The Infernal Devices.  The Infernal Devices series takes place 129 years before its sequel series, The Mortal Instrument.  

Clockwork Angel takes place in Victorian England in 1878.  16 year-old Tessa Gray, the female protagonist, is leaving her old home in New York after her aunt’s death and to go to England to live with her brother, Nate.  Their parents died when they were both young, so they stayed at their aunt’s house.  Tessa grows up as a normal girl, attending school, wearing dresses, and learning how to be a proper lady.  She never goes against tradition.  However, when Tessa’s aunt suddenly passes away she goes to England, leaving behind her home and her old self.

            Once arriving in London, Tessa is kidnapped by the Dark Sisters who believe that Tessa has magical powers.  Tessa actually does have powers and can shape-shift into any person if she has an object that belonged to that person.  With the Dark Sisters, she is forced to shape-shift and if she does not, she is punished and her brother will be punished as well.  The Dark Sisters tell Tessa that she is going to marry the Magister and that the Magister paid them to help Tessa learn how to change.  

Six weeks after being kidnapped Tessa escapes with the help of some shadow hunters.  Shadow hunters are people who are part angel and part human warriors. The shadow hunters help protect the world from demons.

She then finds herself in the London Institute of shadow hunters. She decides to live there until the shadow hunters find Nate.  While at the institute, Tessa learns more about herself and with the help of two shadow hunters, Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs, she learns how to protect herself.

Who is the Magister and what does he want with Tessa?  Will the shadow hunters be able to find Nate?  Will Tessa be able to trust the shadow hunters enough to let them help her?  Will she be able to adjust to a society where girls fight and dress like men?  Find out in the amazing novel Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare. 

Clockwork Angel is very interesting and even though I thought it was amazing, some say that it starts slowly.  The farther you get into the book, though, you fall in love with the characters and you can’t put the book down.  This book is about coming of age and finding out who you are.  There are many mysteries in this novel leaving the reader demanding answers out of a book that holds many secrets.  There are many twists and turns in this book as well as romance.  There are so many themes in this book that everyone who reads it will love it. Tessa is a headstrong girl that many people love and can relate to.  This is an amazing book and I hope you love it as much as I do. 

Amusement Parks Around the Country

From Disneyworld to Georgia’s very own Six Flags, here’s a look at some of our nation’s most beloved amusement parks.

Six Flags Over Georgia

This super-hero-themed park is located in Atlanta and boasts over 30 rides, including several well-known roller coasters such as Batman, Superman, Goliath, and The Great American Scream Machine. Along with the Georgia Cyclone, The Great American Scream Machine is considered a wooden classic. When it was built in 1973, it was among the world’s longest and tallest roller coasters. The Georgia Cyclone, also a wooden roller coaster, followed in The Scream Machine’s success, opening for the first time in 1990 and quickly gained popularity. Six Flags’ other icon is Goliath, the 20 stories tall, 8.5 acres long steel monstrous roller coaster. Goliath reaches speeds of 70 miles per hour. Since its opening in 2006, it has remained a favorite of roller coaster enthusiasts everywhere.

King’s Dominion

King’s Dominion is located outside of Richmond, Virginia. This park’s thrill rides include the 50 mph Anaconda, the 27 stories high Drop Tower, and the 300 feet tall Intimidator 305. The park also contains family rides such as the Americana Ferris wheel and the Avalanche bobsled ride. King’s Dominion is home to a one-third replica of the Eiffel Tower, which is one of the park’s signature attractions. From the top, guests have a panoramic view of the park and surrounding countryside.

Busch Gardens

Not too far from King’s Domain, this amusement park is located in Williamsburg, Virginia. Busch Gardens stands out from other amusement parks with its many close-up animal interaction tours. The park is known for housing some of the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdale horses, and was originally opened to promote Anheuser-Busch. Its signature thrill rides include Apollo’s Chariot, the Griffon, and the Loch Ness Monster.

Universal Studios, Orlando Resort

Located in Orlando, Florida, this movie-themed amusement park has gained a lot of popularity since the opening of its latest section, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. In addition to the magic of walking through Hogsmeade and Hogwarts, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter contains rides such as the Dueling Dragons, Flight of the Hippogriff, and The Forbidden Journey. In other areas of the park, popular thrill rides include The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, Revenge of the Mummy, Doctor Doom’s Fearfall, and The Incredible Hulk Coaster. The Universal Orlando Resort is home to the famous Blue Man Group.

Disneyland

Over on the West Coast, Disneyland is located in California. It is comprised of two parks, Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. Main Street, USA is the famous entrance to Disneyland Park. Other areas of the park include Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, New Orleans Square, Frontierland, and Adventureland. Disney California Adventure Park is home to rides such as California Screamin’ and the Grizzly River Run.

Walt Disney World

Disneyworld, located in Orlando, Florida, is one of the most well known amusement parks in America. Each of its four theme parks, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios, contain classic rides recognized by anyone. The 107-acre Magic Kingdom is home to Disney’s signature Cinderella Castle. Among its many rides are Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, the Haunted Mansion, and It’s a Small World. Epcot is known for its World Showcase, which is a section of the park highlighting different countries from all corners of the globe. Epcot is twice the size of Magic Kingdom, and is known for Spaceship Earth, the ride inside the giant ball commonly shown in photos of the park. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park is home to attractions such as the Kali River Rapids and Expedition Everest. Like Magic Kingdom’s Cinderella Castle and Epcot’s Spaceship Earth, Animal Kingdom is known for its iconic Tree of Life, a 50-foot diameter sculpted tree located in the center of the park.
